LOGISTICS is a skill originally developed to optimize and ensure the orderly and efficient movement of men and materiel to support military objectives.

As a practice, logistics has now gained prominence within the business community with a focus on cost reduction within a service mandate.

On a generalized basis, these skills have not been applied consistently to relief organizations to improve their total effectiveness in meeting overall mandates for delivery of aid and relief.

Also, logisticians are familiar with inventory material overages and discontinued products which can potentially increase total relief donations.

As well, it has been noted historically that relief missions have experienced significant delays in identifying and opening critical sources of basic logistical supplies critical to these efforts.

Logistics practitioners are uniquely positioned to bring significant added value to both of these processes and that is why the World Organization for Relief Logistics Development has now been formed.
